The Business Dept.

Rumors & Legends

“So what does The Business Dept. do exactly?”

 We make you visible…

Stephen Marc Beaudoin of MESD

Will Fries and The Business Department are synonymous with three things: reality, recognition, and results.
Reality: Will truly understands the reality of reaching your audience and telling your story/amplifying your message across social media platforms in a busy and saturated media landscape.
Recognition: Will will help identify the strengths of your business or organization, including the strengths of your staff and/or volunteers, to get the most out of your work together.
Results: Will knows what works, and where to spend your time and money so that you see results – results in improved sales and fundraising, in larger numbers of engaged fans, in stronger brand identity and presence.
I’ve collaborated with and hired Will before, and I intend to do it again!

We have your back…

jeremy-4“I highly recommend Will Fries & The Business Dept. Will stays on top of his game like few I’ve ever worked with, and I’ve worked with many. I can’t express how much I appreciate his help. He makes less work and less worries for me by actually creating solutions to problems. Seriously,  I’m trying to remember anyone who follows through with the consistency he does. I just hope I get to work with Will for awhile longer before he gets swooped up into the big time. Because that’s where he’s headed.”

We know our stuff…

The Business Dept | Supporting Portland's Creatives

“Will Fries and the Business Department have been such a great resource to the Independent Publishing Resource Center! Will is as kind as he is knowledgeable about the inner workings of online marketing. His expertise about navigating the sometimes murky waters of social media has really helped the IPRC rethink how it connects with the community.”

Pollyanne Birge of The Independent Publishing Resource Center

We support you and your projects

Will Fries is a consummate professional, who approaches all his work with warmth, deep attention to detail, spirit of community and commitment to supporting creatives that allows us to be just that, creatives. He has gone above and beyond supporting his clients, putting in extra hours of service to make sure that the job is done right.
After meeting Will a little over a year ago, he has been a great advocate and helpful ear for my work in the music industry. He has connected me to potential positions, met me over coffee to brainstorm how he might be able to support me and was an integral part of helping me launch a successful podcast and website, Gritty Birds, this summer. As a creative, I often am solo in my ventures, but with Will checking in on me, I was far from alone. He would send me relevant articles or meet me for coffee on issues as they came up, from launching on itunes to finding a website template that met my needs and setting up the basic framework while I was learning how to use it. He was proactive in helping me set up elements that I had not thought of, including my email list.   He is persistent without being obtrusive, fair and a true friend to Portland creatives. I have a deep gratitude for the work he has done for me and support him in the work he continues to do in this city. I recommend him highly”

We keep things groovy…

Heather | Super Groovy Cosmic Bus

“When I began my Super Groovy Cosmic Bus journey in 2012, all I had was a toy bus, a point and shoot camera, plenty of ideas, and too much energy. By  2014, it was clear I had tapped into some sort of magic that wasn’t fading, yet I still found myself running in whimsy-driven circles. I knew I wanted to develop my brand further, but I didn’t know how. And then I met Will Fries and found out about The Business Dept. Although I’m still building my dream, Will has already helped me channel my passion and take my work to the next level. He’s been there to aid me in formulating and accomplishing goals specific to my mission and my world (and how I work within it). He’s introduced me to new tools and techniques to improve my organization and communication, and is always there to listen to my concerns, give me advice, and encourage me when the bus wheels start spinning faster than I can run. With Will’s guidance, I finally launched my website and had the confidence to start projects that are now flourishing.”

We fight Evil with Evil…

“My daughters were cast in a musical that was to be put on by a friend of theirs for her high school senior project.  After 7 weeks of rehearsal, and just 2 weeks from opening, the school told them they wouldn’t be able to perform the show due to content concerns.  In desperation, we called or emailed nearly every small theater in Portland asking if they had any performance space that the kids could rent.  Though we were unknown to him (hailing from a school outside of Portland, even) Will Fries (of The Business Dept) responded immediately that he would do whatever he could to help us.

Evil Dead Uncensored in Portland

Before we’d even met him in person, Will secured a venue for us, offered to find us additional rehearsal space, and spoke with his enormous network of artists and non-profits about our plight. In addition to making all that possible, Will did a ton of publicity for us, and his magic got the attention of both TV and print media, such that two out of three of our shows were completely sold out.  Around every corner Will was finding more support for us–he even got Ticketfly to donate their ticketing fees!

In all it was an incredible experience for these kids, who went from being denied the opportunity to perform for their friends on some Tuesday nights in their school’s small theater, to performing sold out shows to entirely new (and grown up!) audiences in the big city.  And literally none of it would have happened without Will Fries (and The Business Dept).   He is astoundingly capable and unfathomably generous, and I could not recommend him more highly.”

“Knowing that Will was experienced in all things social media, I immediately turned to him when I found myself lost in the messy web of FB Business Manager. Will was on it quickly and efficiently, creating a test account to help diagnose the issues I was facing. He was able to help me isolate problems, and together we came up with solutions. I would still be pulling my hair out if it weren’t for Will – his help was invaluable!”
